Business Model and Financial Sustainability
Business Model Framework
INTEGRATED (Journal of Information Technology and Vocational Education), managed by the Department of Information Systems and Technology Education (PSTI), Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Purwakarta Campus, operates on a diamond open-access business model. This framework is designed to ensure long-term operational sustainability while guaranteeing completely free access to scholarly content for the global academic community. Because INTEGRATED does not charge any Article Processing Charges (Free APC), our model relies on steadfast institutional support, cost-efficient editorial workflows, and strategic resource allocation that aligns with UPI’s mission to advance knowledge at the intersection of computing technology and vocational pedagogy.
This model upholds our core social responsibility: ensuring that financial considerations never compromise editorial independence, research integrity, or global accessibility. We believe that the dissemination of innovative research should not be constrained by commercial viability or an author's ability to pay. The continuous backing from our institution ensures that INTEGRATED remains a highly inclusive, balanced, and sustainable platform for researchers worldwide.
Performance Measurement and Accountability
- Resource and Efficiency KPIs: Instead of commercial financial metrics, our key performance indicators focus on the optimal utilization of institutional resources, the cost-efficiency of our publishing workflows, and the return on academic visibility. The PSTI UPI management conducts periodic reviews to track operational performance, monitor infrastructure utilization, and make necessary adjustments to optimize the editorial process.
- Sustainability Indicators: The long-term sustainability of the journal is evaluated using academic and operational metrics, including submission growth, publication turnaround efficiency, the geographic diversity of authors, citation impact, and author satisfaction. These indicators ensure that the institutional backing translates directly into improved academic quality, broader global reach, and service excellence.
- Transparency and Reporting: The editorial board provides periodic updates to relevant university stakeholders, detailing resource allocation, workflow enhancements, and strategic investments in journal infrastructure (such as the recent upgrade to OJS 3). This reporting ensures transparency, accountability, and clearly demonstrates the correlation between institutional support and scholarly impact.
Risk Management and Contingency Planning
- Strategic Risk Management: INTEGRATED mitigates external risks by continuously monitoring global open-access publishing trends, technological advancements, and shifts in academic dissemination practices. By relying on solid institutional backing rather than fluctuating market-driven revenues, the journal builds strong resilience against international economic conditions and shifting funding cycles.
- Operational Risk Management: Potential operational challenges—such as system downtimes, workflow disruptions, platform migrations, or staff transitions—are proactively addressed through robust continuity plans, technology redundancy (backups), and periodic training for the editorial team. These measures guarantee uninterrupted publishing operations and consistent adherence to high-quality standards.
- Regulatory and Compliance Risk: The journal actively monitors evolving international publishing regulations, ethical guidelines (such as COPE standards), and copyright requirements. Regular reviews of our licensing arrangements, author guidelines, and indexing criteria help us identify and mitigate potential legal or compliance risks at an early stage.
